Australian Disaster
Recovery specialises in restoring electrical, electronic and mechanical
equipment damaged by fire, water, chemical or environmental contaminants.
With emphasis on the insurance industry and the corporate
sector, we are able to evaluate damage, produce assessments and advice on the
aptness of restoration or replacement.
Disaster Recovery is aided by our portable emergency
mobile unit (EMU), multi configurable and available for on-site restoration.
Data recovery is one of
our specialties retrieving data and multimedia files from damaged computer/data
storage equipment.
THE
DAMAGE THE DANGER
Damage by water, fire, chemical spillage and
environmental disasters cause equipment to become contaminated.
The most common contaminants are silt and acidic
chemicals in water damaged equipment, soot and chloride in fire-damaged equipment
and operational dust in environmentally damaged equipment. Although these
contaminants will accelerate the process of corrosion, they will not damage the
equipment immediately. However, switching on equipment while it is contaminated
increases the possibility that irreversible damage will occur.
WATER DAMAGE
Since water is electrically conductive, water damage endangers human
lives as well as the structural integrity of the equipment. Water and
dissimilar metals, which are in electrical contact, can form corrosion cells
(batteries), which cause rapid deterioration of the equipment.
Australian Disaster Recovery has developed a process
whereby degradation of water-damaged equipment can be stopped as long as it is
attended promptly.
FIRE DAMAGE
Indirect damage by fire is usually less serious than damage by water,
unless electrical wires have been exposed to flames, or water, used to
extinguish the fire.
Soot is electrically conductive, and can be transported
by air currents to very difficult places, such as between electronic
components.
Chloride is a direct product of burning PVC materials,
and is airborne in its gaseous state. Airborne chloride has the ability to
attach itself to dust, soot and other surfaces of electrical or mechanical
equipment. Once chlorides become attached to metal surfaces, they absorb water
molecules from the environment, creating hydrochloric acid. Many metals are
corroded by acids and the more acidic the environment the faster the corrosive
process.
However, even if contaminated equipment is not in working
order, the decontamination process will be successful. The equipment may need
to be serviced prior to recommissioning.

This list describes the actions necessary to proceed with document restoration.
Document restoration due to fire or water damage can occur through flooding,
fire fighting activities, soot fall out, fire extinguisher powder etc.
DEFINITIONS
Document.
A document is a personal or business record consisting of individual or
continuous paper or bound papers such as books, but excluding photographs,
microfiche or works of art.
Level 1. Disaster
A level 1 disaster is one that is less than 160m_ of
documents water or soot affected.
Level 2. Disaster
A level 2 disaster is one that is more than 160m_ of
documents water or soot affected.
Restoration Levels
Restoration level is the quality of restoration required. There are for four
levels.
Dry Only
Documents are placed in the dehumidified chamber, dried, inspected and returned.
Dry wrinkle free
Documents are placed in the dehumidified chamber, dried, ironed or photocopied, inspected and originals or photocopies
returned. Originals will be disposed of in accordance with the clientÕs instructions eg. Shredded and disposed (certified).
Dry original wrinkle free
Documents are placed in the dehumidified chamber, dried, ironed, inspected and
originals only returned.
Soot decontamination
Documents are dry cleaned with chemically treated sponges, placed in a ozone chamber (remove odour) and returned to the customer.
Action Level 1. Disaster
• Notify Australian Disaster Recovery
(02) 9531 1300 24hours 7 days a week
• Advise approximate volume of
documents to be restored
• Advise restoration level
• Advise any high priority requirements
• Segregate dry and wet documents
• Assess whether any documents are
business confidential or have a security classification under the Official
Secrets Act. Segregate the latter.
• Make records to identify and track
documents.
Action Level 2. Disaster
• As above plus:
• Segregate or identify documents as
follows;
• Immediate restoration within the
first 90 m_ restored
• The first 90 m_ to be restored
• The next 70 m_ to be restored
• The remainder that does not need
immediate restoration
